The Kappa Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded on the grounds of the University of West Georgia campus by twelve young women on May 22, 1976. They sought to bring Alpha Kappa Alpha's legacy of sisterhood, service, intelligence, and elegance to the campus and the Carrollton community.

The 12 Distinguished Charter Members of Kappa Tau Chapter are: Mary Helen Baker, Jimmie E. Davis, Velesia Dean, Sharon Dewberry, Catherine Delores Jones, Yvonne Marchman, Cheryl Owens, Frances Patterson, Sandra Sherfield, Glenda Washington, Dorothy Wilson and Sue Ann Wright.
